Americymru, the fastest growing Welsh American social networking site, has linked with Amritsa Ltd, a Wales-based company which specializes in running international film festivals, including the Swansea Bay Film Festival and the International Film Festival South Africa. The AmeriCymru International Film Festival will premier in Portland, Oregon in August 2010.
“This is the festival that honours the individual voice. Its mission is to provide a worldwide public forum for films made by Welsh and Celtic filmmakers,” said festival organizer Gaabriel Becket , “We also welcome films inspired by or based in Wales.”
Portland might seem an unusual choice for a Welsh film festival, being many thousands of miles from Wales, “but it’s a city that welcomes unsual choices,” says organizer Ceri Shaw, “Submissions are open to anyone, anywhere, who has something to say about Wales or the other Celtic nations. We also welcome films that are inspired by Wales or Celtic themes. We look forward to presenting an extremely rich and varied program to our visitors and patrons in August.”
AmeriCymru operates http://americymru.ning.com, a social network for people of Welsh birth or ancestry, or anyone interested in Wales, and presents the Left Coast Eisteddfod, a Welsh American Arts Festival premiering in Portland, Oregon in August 2009.
The week long festival will feature around 200 films submitted by film makers around the world in various categories including Best International Short Film, Best Student Film and many more. These films will be screened at various locations around Portland during the festival and the winning entries will be judged and announced at the end of the week.
Filmmakers can enter their submissions at the Amritsa url for the festival here:

Whether you’re sitting in the little league dugout or pitching on a major league field, baseball always seems to be the sport of the summer. It comes as no surprise that tons of summery films are about the sport of baseball
Both kids and parents know what it is like spending Saturday mornings on the little league films. Whether you love or hate little league, there is definitely a movie that is on your side. The 1976 film The Bad News Bears is about down-and-out minor leaguer Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) who leads an underdog little league team, including a spunky girl pitcher (Tatum O’Neal) and a baseball prodigy (Jackie Earle Haley), to the local championships. Buttermaker’s sour disposition is equally matched by the kids on his team, unifying all of the misfit characters in this film together.
Another film about kids who love baseball is the 1993 film The Sandlot , about another bunch of misfit kids who just play the game and battle the ferious dog next door, known as the Beast. Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) is new in town and was taken under the wing of local baseball prodigy Benjamin Franklin Rodrigues (Mike Vitar). He learns how to play the game and all about the Great Bambino from the guys as well as creates the biggest adventure of the summer when he steals his stepfather’s prize signed baseball to keep on playing the game.

Minor leaguers are also the stuff of films, but just because they play in the minor leagues doesn’t mean these players don’t have big dreams or ambitions. In the 1988 film Bull Durham, the experienced catcher and switch hitter Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) comes to play for the Durham Bulls and is given the job of wrangling in rookie pitcher “Nuke” LaLoosh (Tim Robbins). In the midst of all of the baseball drama is Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) a local baseball groupie who has an affair with one of the players from the team every summer. Unfortunately, this summer, Annie can’t make up her mind whether she wants Crash or Nuke, creating some comic tension on and off the field.
The 1992 Penny Marshall film A League of Their Own takes place in the days of World War II, when women took over all of the jobs on the homefront including being baseball players. Tom Hanks takes the role of Coach Jim Dugan and his team consists of actresses such as Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Ann Cusack, Tracy Reiner, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Jon Lovitz as the team manager. The women face rivalries on the field as well as the worry of husbands being at war. They teach manners to their coach as well as have a little fun themselves.
Everyone knows the classic line “If you build it, he will come” from the 1989 film Field of Dreams. Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is a moderately successful farmer who one night gets a message from Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) to build a baseball field on his farm. Along with Jackson, the seven other White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series appear encouraging Kinsella’s dream. Kinsella knows that his field is supposed to serve a better purpose, but he won’t know what until he heeds the messages.
To know more about the 1919 World Series Scandal, you can try watching the film Eight Men Out, which details it. Starring John Cusack, Christopher Lloyd, and Charlie Sheen, the film depicts how the underpaid White Sox are bribed by gamblers to overthrow the series against Cincinnati, even though the White Sox are by far a much better team. The guilt is too much for some players and they confess, leading to one of the biggest dramas in baseball history.
The Natural is a 1984 film about a minor leaguer who suddenly becomes a legend in the major leagues. Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) is supremely talented and aided by a bat that was cared from a tree shot by lightning. He takes a losing team to the championships in the 1930s, all the while hiding from his mysterious past and downfall as a pitcher. The film also stars Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, Barbara Hershey, Robert Duvall, and Wilford Brimley.
Toted as “the private life of a public hero,” the 1942 biopic The Pride of the Yankees is the emotional story of basbeall hero Lou Gehrig (Gary Cooper) and how his career was cut short by ALS. Gehrig’s career is followed from his childhood to his final speech in Yankee Stadium. Because Gehrig was left-handed and Cooper was right-handed, the game sequences were filmed in reverse and the flipped.
Whether you’re a big baseball fan or not, there is something in every baseball movie to provide you with a lot of fun for summer.
